Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mountain Gorillas The park is home to a large share of the world’s mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei). Rwanda’s side of the Virunga Massif has about half of the global mountain gorilla population. There are 10-12 habituated gorilla groups that trekkers can visit — each group allows a small number of visitors per day to protect the animals. 🦍 Mountain gorillas are endangered but conservation efforts have helped their numbers grow over recent decades. Other Primates & Mammals Golden monkeys, another endangered primate species. Black-fronted duiker, bushbuck, buffalo, and spotted hyena are also found in the park. Elephants have been reported but are now rare in the park. Birdlife About 178 bird species, including some species endemic to the Virunga and Ruwenzori Mountains.

Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) sits in northwest Rwanda in the dramatic Virunga Mountains — an area of forested slopes, extinct volcano peaks, bamboo thickets, and rare wildlife. It’s one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas in the wild and a major reason travelers visit Rwanda.
